All proceeds from the walk on The Village at Rockville’s campus to benefit the National Capital Area Alzheimer’s Association
The Village at Rockville will host its first annual Alzheimer’s Awareness Walk on the community’s scenic campus Saturday, October 7. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at The Village at Rockville Health Center located at 9701 Veirs Drive. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. All forms of support and participation are welcome, including walking, donating, volunteering and sponsoring The Village at Rockville’s team. Proceeds will be donated to the National Capital Area Alzheimer’s Association.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, in 2023 6.7 million people age 65 and older nationwide are affected by Alzheimer’s Disease. By 2025, that figure is estimated to reach 7.2 million. In Maryland, 130,000 older adults are projected to have Alzheimer’s Disease, an 18.2% increase over 2020 data. Maryland tops the nation for the prevalence and number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s Disease by state and county, with Baltimore being the highest-ranking city, according to a July 2023 study of the incidence of Alzheimer’s using 2020 bridged-race postcensal data from the National Center for Health Statistics.
The Village at Rockville’s goal in hosting its Alzheimer’s Awareness Walk on campus is to provide an opportunity for the community’s residents and neighbors from the surrounding local area to participate in Alzheimer’s awareness without the challenge of having to travel to Washington, D.C. for the Alzheimer’s Association’s annual walk on October 14.
“We understand that a lot of people want to support Alzheimer’s awareness but simply can’t travel to the nation’s capital to participate, so we’re bringing the walk to our campus and making it accessible to our residents, team members and the greater Rockville community,” said The Village at Rockville Executive Director Felicia Anthony.
“We believe purpose never stops, and Alzheimer’s Disease is something that touches so many of our residents and team members in very deep and personal ways. By supporting the Alzheimer’s Awareness Walk here on campus, they can make their own powerful contribution to an important cause,” Anthony adds.
The Alzheimer’s Awareness Walk also strengthens The Village at Rockville’s partnership with the outside community by creating a local opportunity for residents, team members and members of the general public to come together in a common purpose for Alzheimer’s awareness and prevention.
