The Board of Directors for The Village at Rockville share a devotion to the ministry, guiding our growth to ensure that our community is the best retirement community in Rockville, Maryland for generations. As NLCS President and CEO Cyndi Walters said, “The Board doesn’t just meet in a Board Room. Roger C. Myers Jr

Board Chair
Roger C. Myers Jr., CPA, MBA is the chief financial officer for the Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Board of Standards, Inc. In this role he oversees CFP Board's finance, information technology and operations functions. Roger brings to CFP Board significant non-profit accounting and finance experience, as well as strategic business planning and operational management.  

Previously, he served as executive vice president and chief financial officer for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) where he managed all aspects of financial and accounting functions. Over the past 29 years, he advanced through the ranks of finance and accounting positions with AOPA, beginning as an accountant, then controller and finally to chief financial officer.

Roger has extensive experience with financial controls, financial and budgetary analysis, process and productivity improvement, as well as development of annual strategic management and operational plans and alignment of resources in support of organizational goals and objectives. 

He earned his Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in accounting from Mount Saint Mary's University in Maryland. Roger maintains professional memberships in Association of International Certified Professional Accountants, Maryland Association of Certified Professional Accountants, American Society of Association Executives and the Association for Financial Professionals.
 

Dr. James E. Balow

Secretary/Treasurer
Dr. James E. Balow is a nephrologist in Bethesda, Maryland. He received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School and has been in practice for more than 20 years. Dr. Balow is affiliated with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he holds the esteemed position of Scientist Emeritus and is a Special Volunteer in the Kidney Diseases Branch.

Heather Burton

Board Member
Ms. Heather Burton currently serves as the director of Surgical Services at Adventist Healthcare Shady Grove Medical Center. She is a lifelong area resident with over 25 years of nursing experience, proudly serving the community of Montgomery County. Heather is a huge sports fan and even serves as a basketball referee while actively raising her son. Heather is currently enrolled in a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at the University of Maryland in Baltimore received her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Western Governors University, and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland.

Janet Meyer

Board Member
For more than 25 years, Janet Meyer has been dedicated to designing thoughtfully crafted environments for older adults. She believes that longevity and overall well-being are deeply connected to creating engaging and purposeful communities. In 2009, this passion led her to joining BCT Design Group, a multidisciplinary design firm with a legacy spanning more than 50 years. There, she co-founded the firm’s housing studio, which she continues to co-lead. Prior to joining BCT, she was an integral member of the senior living studio at CSD Architects, a national leader in senior living design for nonprofit communities.

As a principal at BCT, Meyer draws inspiration from trends in multifamily housing, retail, hospitality and office design to shape innovative senior living communities. She combines her expertise in the full continuum of care with insights from other BCT studios to create dynamic spaces that engage younger generations and incorporate amenities typically found in vibrant urban settings. She also collaborates with her colleagues to explore ways senior and multifamily housing can be integrated into reimagined retail sites and urban or suburban infill areas, fostering intergenerational experiences.

Meyer lives in Baltimore and holds a Bachelor of Arts from Dickinson College and a Master of Architecture from the University of Maryland. She is happily married and the proud mother of two children and four dogs. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, paddle boarding and spending time with her family.

Pastor Derek Solberg

Board Member
Pastor Derek hails from New England, where he first was exposed to faith through the United Church of Christ. In college, he experienced his call and went to Seminary at Union Theological Seminary in New York and completed field education at The Riverside Church. After seminary, he continued his exploration of faith and church history in Ireland (Trinity College, Dublin). When he returned, he felt called to explore chaplaincy, serving for a few years in Clinical Pastoral Education programs as well as a trauma chaplain in Philadelphia. It was in chaplaincy that Pastor Derek felt called to pursue ordination in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, completing his Lutheran Year (Philadelphia) and his internship at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Bethesda, Maryland.

In 2015, Pastor Derek was ordained and was called as Associate Pastor at Emmanuel, serving in that capacity until 2018, when he was called as Pastor at the retirement of his predecessor. Pastor Derek emphasizes the importance of spiritual nourishment, advocating for individual and collective spiritual practices. He is an advocate for social justice and positive change. He believes that faith is a life-long journey of exploration and growing closer to God, and he sees himself on that journey with members of the congregation.

Pastor Derek is married to Ashley Burczak, who is ordained in the Unitarian Universalist

Church. They have two children and a way-too-big greyhound Moose. Together they enjoy hiking, reading and general family chaos. Pastor Derek enjoys history, reading, and physical activities including cycling, lifting weights, golf, basketball and tinkering on his project car.

Cyndi Walters

President and Chief Executive Officer National Lutheran Communities and Services
Cyndi Walters was named president and chief executive officer (CEO) of National Lutheran Communities and Services (NLCS) in May 2021, assuming the position full time in August 2021. Prior to this role, she served as chief operating officer (COO) since 2016.

Cyndi has served at NLCS in varying capacities for nine years; first as a consultant before joining as chief operating officer in 2016. Cumulatively, Walters has over 30 years of experience in the senior living industry including a strong background in strategically growing and diversifying the organization and an enhanced focus on operating as a senior-living system and leveraging its benefits and efficiencies. Prior to joining NLCS, she provided project management and advisory services to senior living organizations through Walters Advisors, LLC. She has also served in a leadership role at Presbyterian Senior Living in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, and during her 19 years at KPMG (a global network of professional firms providing audit, tax and advisory services), spent significant time as a partner and leader of their National Senior Living Advisory Practice

As president and CEO, Cyndi’s focus is strategically growing and furthering NLCS’ mission to honor, inspire and support choice and opportunity in partnership with older adults. Cyndi is an advocate for “aging with choice,” which means supporting older adults in making their own choices in aging, whether it means moving to a senior living community or bringing in supportive services to their home. She is also an advocate for team members across the organization and leads a team dedicated to ensuring NLCS remains a Great Place to Work® and an employer of choice for those who have a heart to serve older adults.

Cyndi is a native of the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area and holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree from York College of Pennsylvania.
